You have gold jewellery in your jewellery box — a necklace from your mother, an old wedding ring, or a bracelet you never wear anymore. But how much is that gold actually worth? In this article, we explain step by step how to calculate the value of your gold.
Step 1: Determine the karat of your gold
The karat indicates how much pure gold a piece of jewellery contains. The higher the karat, the more valuable:
- 24 karat — 99.9% pure gold (bars, certain coins)
- 22 karat — 91.6% pure gold (some coins and jewellery)
- 18 karat — 75% pure gold (high-end jewellery)
- 14 karat — 58.3% pure gold (most common in Belgium)
- 9 karat — 37.5% pure gold (more affordable jewellery)
You'll find the hallmark stamped on the jewellery: look for 750 (18K), 585 (14K) or 375 (9K). No hallmark? Have it tested at a certified gold buyer.
Step 2: Weigh your gold
Gold value is calculated per gram. Use a kitchen scale for an estimate, but for an exact measurement visit a professional gold buyer with certified weighing equipment.
Note: the total weight of a piece of jewellery is not always pure gold. A ring with a diamond weighs more than the gold alone.
Step 3: Check the current gold price

Example calculation
Suppose you have an 18 karat gold necklace weighing 25 grams and the daily price for 18K is €91 per gram:
25 grams × €91 = €2,275
Factors that influence the price
- Karat — higher karat = more value per gram
- Weight — more grams = higher total price
- Daily rate — the international gold price fluctuates daily
- Condition — for gold value, condition doesn't matter
